Welcome to the Capital Audiofest, the East Coast’s Favorite Audio Show! CAF started out in 2010 as a very casual show and has evolved into a well-organized and well-attended event that most everyone in the audio industry knows about.

CAF is recognized as a fun, friendly and family-oriented show, where you often see families strolling from room to room listening to music, auditioning gear and browsing the multiple bins of vinyl records, CDs and accessories in the Atrium Marketplace. In the evenings we have live music in the bar and special live performers in the Theater, and local distillers offering tastings.

CAF is an experience that, once you try it you will feel as though you’re part of the family.

Zoom Meeting April 23rd:

Please join us this month for a presentation by Tom Fine on the history
of stereo recording. Tom gave this material to the AES a few years ago
in two parts: “The Roots of Stereophony” and “The Commercialization of
Stereophony.” He promises not to dumb it down for us lowly audiophiles,
but he will speed it up into one seamless lecture, which will delve into
the technologies and key people involved in the early commercialization
of stereophonic sound recordings. To really spice up the meeting, Tom
will include rare, historically significant audio examples, including
excerpts from the first commercially-available stereo LP, plus excerpts
from the author's collection of stereo demonstration records and tapes.
Put on your best headphones on and enjoy the show.

Tom of course is the scion of the late Fine family of recording
engineers, Robert and Wilma Cozart Fine. A couple of summers ago Tom
addressed us live at an NJAS meeting at Leon Paboojian's.

Most of you are already familiar with Tom’s work, but to give you the
fuller picture, we should mention that Tom is a member of the
Association of Recorded Sound Collections, the Audio Engineering Society
and the Adirondack 46rs. He operates an analog-to-digital transfer and
mastering studio in Brewster, NY. Recent work includes producing,
remastering and authoring booklet notes for the ongoing Mercury Living
Presence reissue program for Universal Music Group's Decca Classics and
Eloquence imprints, and a major tape transfer project for the Boston
Symphony Orchestra's archive. Past projects have included tranfer and
remaster work for audio used in the Netflix documentary about Nina
Simone, What Happened, Miss Simone?. Tom also remastered and wrote the
liner notes for the Mercury Living Presence CD box sets. Tom has
published articles and equipment reviews in the ARSC Journal and TapeOp
magazine as well as the AES Historical Committee website
andPreservationsound.com . His music
reviews have been published inStereophile, the ARSC Journal, TapeOp

Mar 19, 2022 1:30 PM

Mark block of The (New York) Audiophile Society has done it again. This
month`s Zoom guest is none other than Barry Diament of Soundkeeper
Recordings, certainly one of the absolute top recording engineers in the
USA.

The Zoom meeting will take place on Sat, March 19 at 1:30 PM Eastern.
As with last month`s Zoom, you will need to register in advance (see below).

Mr. Diament, founder of Soundkeeper Recordings and one of the best audio
engineers in the country, has been a member of The Audiophile Society
for decades. Don’t hold that against him! Barry began his career in 1975
as a studio assistant at a small label, picking up the skills of
recording, mixing, editing and even mastering lacquers for vinyl. He was
soon promoted to Chief Engineer but moved on to Atlantic Records in
1978. In 1983 he became head of Atlantic’s CD mastering division. He
continued his mastering career independently until 2006 when he founded
Soundkeeper Recordings, where he makes purist recordings of the highest
possible sound quality.

His latest release, “The Twain Shall Meet” by the Cosmic American
Derelicts, is in that tradition of utmost naturalness, creating a sense
that the listener is in the presence of the musicians in the original
performing space. Barry’s recording setup is a matched pair of
Earthworks QTC-1 mics, Nordost cables, a Metric Halo ULN-8 as preamp and
ADC, and Metric Halo Console X (Session) running on a MacBook pro
laptop, recording at 24/192. For final studio monitoring and mastering,
he employs Magnepan 3.7i speakers, but the mix is essentially
accomplished by the musicians themselves, under Barry’s direction,
playing together at the recording venue. In this case, it was the
historic “Silo” originally owned by Skitch Henderson.

Here`s how Barry explains his philosophy: “Soundkeeper Recordings are
made with all the musicians playing live, in real time. The musicians
determine the musical balances and musical dynamics. They are recorded
directly to stereo. There are no overdubs. There are no mixes. We call
it ‘recording without a net.’ The prime interest is in capturing the
feel of the performance, the excitement and emotion that make the music
what it is. This is preferred over a note-perfect performance with less
feel. If the feel is there and the players agree, we consider it a take.”

Barry has generously agreed to give away three copies of his latest
recording (format of your choice) and six copies of other Soundkeeper
recordings! We will use your registration info as the raffle entry.

Register in advance for this meeting:
https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZElfuGsqD8uHtTO5JfAjyFS16XliA_iGEZB

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing
information about joining the meeting with a link and passcode. We have
eliminated the e-mail authentication requirement, as it resulted in too
much confusion last time.

Mark Block, our Zoom meetings guru, who is both a New York Audiophile
Society and NJAS member, has the following Zoom meeting announcement for
us. Please be sure to read this all the way through, especially the
section on NOW-MANDATORY PREREGISTRATION for the Zoom meetings! [If you
don`t preregister, you won`t get in!]

Sunday, February 6th, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. Eastern

We had an all-analog meeting in December with J.R. Boisclair, but what’s
to stop us from having another? This month, we’re happy to announce that
the wizard of wax, the viscount of vinyl, the lord of the long play,
Charles Kirmuss, will be delving into the theory and practice of
cleaning our precious records. Mr. Kirmuss takes his subject so
seriously that he refuses to call what he does record "cleaning." He
calls it record "restoration." Just as J.R. Boisclair at Wally Tools
upended conventions about cartridge setup, Charles has been equally
disruptive in challenging the myths and misrepresentations of record
care that have accumulated over several decades. Using his $120,000
Keyence VX-7000 digital imager to support his findings, Charles has
turned the record-cleaning ritual into a science. And if you visit his
website, you`ll see that his customers love it!

Our friend Michael Fremer headlined an article this way: “If Kirmuss
Audio`s Record Cleaning Ideas Are Correct, Are Everyone Else`s Wrong?”
Let’s listen to Charles and decide for ourselves. His presentation will
cover the production process, the reproduction mechanics when stylus
meets groove, and how to get the best sound out of our records. We will,
of course, have a Q&A session, so bring your questions and be prepared
to learn.

As you know, Charles sells a very affordable and very complete
ultrasonic record cleaning—sorry, record restoration—system. It’s a
great system, but somewhat time-consuming in practice. Is it the best?
Is it worth the effort? We think so, and Charles has generously agreed
to give everyone attending the meeting a special “show” discount on the
complete KA-RC-1 system: $895 shipped, with an extra 300 ml refill
bottle, extra carbon fiber/parastatic felt brush, and goat hair brush
included at no charge. The items sold separately have a retail value
$1,385, so this is a great offer. Charles will also raffle away five
carbon fiber/parastatic felt brushes and four KA-RS-1 record supports.

NOW, AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT. After the Zoom bombing at our last
meeting, WE WILL BE REQUIRING ADVANCE REGISTRATION FOR ALL FUTURE ZOOMS.
No biggie, but see notes below. We will use your registration info as
the raffle entry.

Our monthly Zoom meeting with the New York Audiophile Society will be on Saturday, January 8th, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. Eastern.

Per Mark Block, who belongs to both the New York group and our own NJAS, our guest will be:

The illustrious Martin Colloms, founder of HIFICRITIC magazine. He has written for many decades for Hi-Fi News (33 years), Stereophile, HiFi for Pleasure, Hi-Fi Choice and Hi-Fi Plus. We think Mr. Colloms should rightly be called “Mr. Hi-Fi.” He is also the author of the seminal book, High Performance Loudspeakers, originally published in 1977 and now in its seventh edition. He has written other books on computer-controlled and digital testing. Matin Colloms is a reviewer with unusually deep technical chops.

An engineer by training, Martin worked on speaker designs for Monitor Audio early in his career. After leaving Monitor Audio, he devoted himself to writing, eventually founding HIFICRITIC with Paul Messenger in 2010. The staff includes many of our favorite UK reviewers, including Peter Comeau, Stan Curtis, Ben Duncan, Andrew Everard, Tony Faulkner and others.

He writes,
`Music replay in the home is a privilege, hearing more of the music, more of the production and not least more of the musicianship is why I devote massive time and effort in the attempt to optimise audio systems.` During our Zoom, we’ll be discussing what to listen for when optimizing our own systems, including everything from frequency response to the somewhat more controversial concept of pace, rhythm and dynamics. We’ll also cover the interesting question of why LP playback is still popular in our digital age. And, of course, we’ll talk about hi-fi reviewing in general and HIFICRITIC in particular.

Dec 9, 2021 7:30 PM

Even with all the exciting vinyl products at the recent Capital Audio Fest, one analog guy blew our minds—not with a new vinyl-cutting process or new cartridge technology, but with good, old-fashioned research into cartridge manufacturing and tonearm optimization. We are pleased to have that guy, J.R. Boisclair of WallyTools and WAM Engineering, as our guest for the next Zoom meeting. WAM Engineering is a company formed in 2020 to continue the work of the late Wally Malewicz, a turntable setup guru and maker of unique alignment tools used by audiophiles who want to get the best out of their precious vinyl. None other than Michael Fremer calls Wally his mentor.

Wally’s legacy continues under his son, Andrzej, and Wally’s former assistant, J.R. Boisclair, who are now delving deeper into what makes a cartridge and tonearm work optimally (or abysmally, in some cases). If you attended J.R.’s seminars (or the Q&A sponsored by Gary Koh, Merrill Wettasinghe, Larry Borden and Isaac Rivera) at the Capital Audio Fest, you understand the kind of breakthrough work J.R. is doing. Recently he’s been consulting with cartridge manufacturers to develop quality-control tools to assure better manufacturing standards. For us audiophile grunts who are not setup wizards like Michael Fremer or Mike Trei, J.R. makes a full range of tools that can produce remarkable sonic improvements when used to mount, align and adjust phono cartridges. (And more tools are on the way, which he’ll be telling us about.) He also offers custom services to help get the most out of our favorite cartridges. And he makes free “Wally School” educational videos for those who want to delve deeper into cartridge setup issues.
This meeting will be particularly entertaining and informative for vinyl lovers, but it will also be fascinating for anyone who loves audio science. Note that because J.R. is on the West Coast, we’ve decided to hold the Zoom at night. And because weekends these days are probably booked up with football, shopping and family events, we’re going back to a weeknight meeting (several of which were well attended last year).

This is a joint meeting of The Audiophile Society and the NJ Audio Society. Guests from the Audio Syndrome, the Connecticut Audio Society, the Philadelphia Area Audio Group, the Boston Audio Society, the Atlanta Audio Society and others are welcome to attend as guests. The meeting will begin at 7:30, with R.J’s Q&A starting at 8:00. As usual, participants should “raise their hands” using the Zoom “Reactions” to ask questions.

DC's Favorite audio show is back! Full C-19 restrictions apply, however, meaning the normal schmoozfest will be a bit subdued. Friday through Sunday. Several NJAS members will there! Go say hi!

Oct 30, 2021 1:30 PM

We’re having a second Zoom meeting this month. Our guest on October 30th will be Gary Gill, who runs the Capital Audio Fest. The show opens less than a week later, on Friday, November 5, so Gary can give us the latest scoop on which manufacturers will be there, what special events are planned, and what COVID protocols will be in place to keep us safe. We’ll also be discussing the future of audio shows in general, and what it takes to put on a successful show.

MONTHLY AUDIOPHILE SOCIETY MEETING:

Saturday, October 2nd, 2021 at 1:30 PM Eastern

The Audiophile Society will conduct this meeting anywhere you want to be.

Apologies for the short notice, but when one of the legends of high-end audio makes himself available for a meeting on a particular day, we grab it! That legend is Keith O. Johnson, one of the founding partners of Reference Recordings (with Tam Henderson and Keith’s wife, Marcia), one of the principals of Pacific Microsonics (with Michael Pflaumer and Mike Ritter), and the Director of Engineering for Spectral Audio. Keith has received eight GRAMMY nominations, winning for Best Surround Album in 2011. In 2008 he received the prestigious Silver Medal Award from the Audio Engineering Society. He has two Absolute Sound Golden Ear awards and three awards from the Academy Advancing High-Performance Audio. Not enough? He’s an excellent keyboard player and a competitive middle-distance runner. Oh, and he’s a super-nice guy who’s willing to share his precious time with us.

Keith Johnson has recorded over 140 albums for Reference Recordings, and who among us doesn’t have a few dozen or more in our collections? He knows analog recording inside and out, building from scratch or modifying equipment for ultimate performance, from microphones to preamps to tape recorders. Equally at home in the digital world, he was among the early pioneers investigating – and doing something about – the problems of digital recording. The first “high-def” digital audio files most of us bought were Keith’s recordings for Reference. We feel very privileged to be able to speak to “Professor” Johnson this coming Saturday. (And a shout out to Arnie Balgalvis, who put this meeting together.)

Monthly NY Audiophile Society Meeting:
Sunday, September 19th, 2021 at 1:30 PM Eastern

The Audiophile Society will conduct this meeting anywhere you want to be.

After a late summer hiatus, we’re starting up the Zoom meetings again. This month we’re pleased to announce that one of the U.K.’s preeminent speaker designers, Derek Hughes, will be our guest. Derek started his career in the 1970s at the BBC, where he worked in the audio and video engineering departments until moving over to Spendor to help his parents. (Derek is the son of Spencer and Dorothy Hughes, founders of Spendor.) After Spencer’s untimely death in 1983, Derek took over as Technical Director, managing the company with his mother for over 25 years. In 2004 he started Derek Hughes Audio Services, where he created updated version of the revered BBC LS3/5a & LS3/6 for Stirling Broadcast and the LS3/5, LS3/5a, LS5/8, LS5/9 and LS5/5 loudspeakers for Graham Audio. He also worked with Graham Audio to produce a high-power, high-quality music & effects loudspeaker system for the Royal Opera House in London. Derek will be explaining some of the breakthrough design tricks that made BBC speakers so neutral in general, unequaled in reproducing the human voice, and revered by audiophiles for 40 years.

As you might have heard, Paul Pomerantz is undergoing chemotherapy this month. He’d love to hear from friends, so if you’d like to shoot the sh*t with him, we can pass along his phone number. Allen Edelstein will take over co-host duties for this meeting.

Time: Sep 19, 2021 01:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada). Derek will join us at 2:00.

Come one, come all to the NJAS DIY audio recording roundtable Zoom meeting, 2PM-4PM Feb 21st, 2021, featuring a panel of practiced NJAS DIY recordists. The current panel features well known NJASers Bill Cesanek, Jim Glynn, Izzy Marrone and Dr. Rob Paull. Once we reach out to other area clubs, others may join. Learn from those who have been there and done that what works and doesn't work for taking your tape deck (or maybe something more modern...) on the road to various venues and events, recording all sorts of things and how the results stack up against so-called “professional” studio and live-event recordings. Hear about the insights gained over the years, not only for their own efforts, but what about all recordings, amateur or commercial.

We'll go over the experience of doing recordings: getting permission, lugging gear, trying out different setups and gear, particular the endless search for good mics and pres. Then we cover the mixing of the results, editing and what you can expect once you've captured those phonons. Samples are promised. We want to, in particular, get and give a sense of the results you can achieve now with available gear, including Earthworks and DPA mics, cables, all-in-one totes, tube mics and more!

If you'd like to be on the panel (we need to keep this manageable), please contact Jim Glynn. Questions can be asked before and during the meeting, of course, moderated by Jim and Bill C. Please sign up on our events calendar on the NJAS website.

Some of the recording samples will appear in our new "Downloads" folder link above in the main menu.

This meeting will be recorded for posterity. You can attend the DIY meeting and check this out later if you want. Start time is 2 pm. Please join PAAG for their webinar with Mike Moffat, the digital half of Schiit Audio. Mike Moffat is the Co-Founder of Schiit Audio, along with his partner Jason Stoddard, our Radio Free PAAG interviewee from May, 2020. He is a recognized leader in the field of digital audio and offers strong opinions on what DAC topology works best for their product line.

"A snippet of the back story - I have been an audiophile since high school. I went to UCLA, but got drafted in the middle of it and ended up graduating [in Electrical Engineering] two years late. I'm giving away my age. I then worked briefly at Douglas Aircraft and decided I didn't like a desk job. So I got a more adventurous job with Texas Instruments working on experimental digital tape recorders. These were 8-bit machines that sampled at 50Hz to pick up low-frequency information that geologists used. It was overseas employment and paid well. When I came back from overseas with all that money, I could afford to be in audio professionally. In 1977 I built a preamp called the Theta Preamp. I sold Theta to my partner in 1982, did interconnects for a while, and got involved in import and export."

The PAAG has kindly invited us to its webinar with Jeff Dorgay on Sunday, January 10 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Eastern.

This is not a Zoom meeting — only the moderator and guest will be talking, but questions can be forwarded to the moderator during the webinar. You must register at the link below, after which you'll receive permission to attend the webinar plus two reminder emails before the event.

https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/7872922580666375693

Jeff Dorgay bio: "A Wisconsin native, Jeff built his first amplifier from a schematic in the RCA tube manual at age 14. His hi-fi sales career came to an abrupt end when he told a customer to take his big check up the street to the local Levinson dealer for much better equipment. 15 years as a commercial photographer led to writing about the rapidly expanding world of digital imaging at the turn of the century, writing for Macworld, CNet, Studio Photography and many others. He has also been a consultant to Adobe, Roland DGA and Olympus Cameras. He still takes a very active role in the images produced for TONEAudio, contributing a major portion of the magazine's visuals. These days, the Pacific Northwest is home, where you can find him in the local record stores, or under the hood of a BMW, working on an article for his latest venture, MYBMWHabit.com.”

Note: Our next Zoom meeting will be Saturday, January 23 at 2:00 p.m. Details to follow.

In 1937, famed Italian composer Arturo Toscanini came out of retirement to conduct the newly formed NBC Symphony Orchestra at the behest of RCA`s chairman, David Sarnoff. This talk will trace the history of Toscanini`s time with NBS, show some of the Toscanini artifacts we have in the collection and will explain how it is that the Sarnoff came to possess the maestro`s house keys.
